Nigeria recorded their first win of the FIFA Women’s World Cup on Wednesday against South Korea, boosting their hopes of progression into the next stage.

The Super Falcons beat the Asians 2-0 in their second match of the tournament, lifting themselves off the bottom of Group A with one more match to play.

The win was also the first in the 2019 tournament by an African side, with Cameroon and South Africa having also lost their opening matches.

The West Africans took the lead after defender Kim Do-yeon volleyed past her own keeper in the 29th minute.

Ex-Arsenal player Oshoala held off a defender before rounding the keeper to double Nigeria’s lead, securing a vital win that could help their cause for progression past the Group Stage.

The Super Falcons will play their last Group Stage game against France on Monday.

South Africa will play their second game against China on Thursday, wile Cameroon will play Netherlands on Saturday, as both sides look to emulate Nigeria and record wins.
