North African countries have expressed a joint appeal for an immediate ceasefire in Libya, saying the current situation was a cause for “deep concern.”

Foreign Affairs ministers from Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt on Wednesday held a meeting in Tunis to deliberate on the Libyan situation.

Libya has been dogged by heightened violence for months now, as strongman Khalifa Haftar, commander of the Libyan National Army, clashed against the UN-backed government in a bid to take control of Tripoli.

In a statement released overnight, the three Foreign Ministers denounced “the continuous flow of weapons” and the “influx of foreign terrorist fighters” in Libya.

They agreed to enhance their countries’ cooperation in the fight against terrorism in the North African region.

The Foreign Ministers’ call comes following another from the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who earlier this week urged all countries to implement an arms embargo against Libya, saying illegal weapons transfers by land, sea and air are fueling the fighting in the oil-rich country.

Libya descended into chaos in 2011 following the ouster and killing of former leader Muammar Gaddafi.
