A 6.0 magnitude earthquake on Monday rattled China’s Changning county on Yibin City, Sichuan province, hitting a depth of 16 kilometers, the country’s earthquake monitoring agency said.
China Earthquake Networks Center confirmed that the quake happened at 22:55 Monday (Beijing Time), with no immediate reports of casualties.
The earthquake was felt in major cities, including the Sichuan provincial capital Chengdu and the metropolis of Chongqing.
CENC said several aftershocks followed the earthquake.
China’s southwestern Sichuan province is prone to earthquakes, the most known being the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, which killed over 69,000 people.
Monday’s earthquake caused cracks on buildings, prompting fears by residents of Changning county.
