U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is heading to Africa next week to attend a counter-terrorism conference and assess recovery efforts from two cyclones earlier this year in Mozambique.
U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric announced the scheduled visit on Monday, saying that Guterres will arrive in Nairobi, Kenya, on July 9 and is set to speak at a high-level African regional conference on counter-terrorism and preventing extremism.
The U.N chief will also meet with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and participate in a town hall meeting with youths involved in programs to prevent violent extremism.
Dujarric says Guterres will the head to Mozambique’s capital of Maputo on July 10 for meetings with President Filipe Nyusi and other officials.
On July 12, he will travel to Beira to talk with survivors of cyclones Idai and Kenneth and others involved in recovery efforts.
Mozambique was hit by two tropical storms earlier this year, killing over 1,000 people and destroying property worth millions of dollars.
The U.N announced in June that donors had pledged an initial $1.2 billion to help the country in its post-cyclone recovery.
The U.N Development Program said the post cyclone reconstruction will focus on restoring productivity, social services, and infrastructure in Sofala, Manica, Tete, Zambezia, Inhambane, Nampula and Cabo Delgado provinces.
While in Mozambique, Antonio Guterres will assess recovery efforts from two cyclones earlier this year.
