Uganda’s national men’s football team resumed training on Wednesday after the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) agreed to pay players $6,000 each following their boycott of training on Tuesday.

The players had demanded bonuses for progressing to the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The FUFA took action following a meeting at its headquarters in Mengo on Wednesday.

“Considering the magnitude and importance of the event of Uganda Cranes’ match against the Teranga Lions of Senegal, the interests of the nation, government, the sponsors and the gallant fans, FUFA has agreed to pay 6,000 USD to each player over and above the agreed terms in the Code of Conduct and that matters of finances will not be discussed until the end of Uganda Cranes’ participation in the tournament,” a statement on the FUFA website read in part.

The FUFA said that all allowances earned since May 13 until June 30, including winning bonuses for the DR Congo and Zimbabwe games, have been paid and received by players.

In a series of posts on Twitter, the FUFA confirmed that the players had trained at the Arab Contractors Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday evening.

At a pre-match press conference on Thursday, coach Sebastien Desabre told journalists that the team was fully focused on the game against Senegal, Africa’s number one ranked team.

“Like we played against DR Congo & Egypt, the team is coherent and positive. We trained well on Wednesday & shall conduct the final session on Thursday. All the players are set,” Desabre said.

Uganda will play Senegal at the Cairo International Stadium in Cairo on Friday.
