Duduzane Zuma has been acquitted on culpable homicide and negligent driving charges.

Magistrate Tebogo Thupaatlase says prosecutors failed to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt.

In 2014, Zuma, the son of former South African president Jacob Zuma, was involved in a crash with a taxi. Phumzille Dube, a woman traveling inside the taxi was killed. Another person was injured.

Zuma testified that his car hydroplaned and spun out of control after hitting a pool of water.

Magistrate Thupaatlase declared that there was no evidence that Zuma was negligent, ruling that the fatal crash was unavoidable.

“There was an unforeseeable puddle of water, and there was no proof that even by reducing his speed, Zuma could have prevented his vehicle from aquaplaning.”

Jacob Zuma told state broadcaster SABC he was pleased by the ruling. Duduzane Zuma declined to answer questions.
