Angolan President João Lourenço on Friday hosted his counterparts from Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo for a quadripartite summit.

The three visiting leaders, President Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), President Paul Kagame (Rwanda) and President Felix Tshisekedi (DR Congo), joined their host President Lourenco in Luanda for talks on boosting the region’s security.

The forum comes less than two months after Presidents Kagame, Lourenço and Tshisekedi signed a tripartite agreement in Kinshasa, in which they committed to strengthening cooperation on security matters, including the crushing of non-state armed groups.

All the four countries experienced years of warfare in the past, as different armed groups fought to snatch power from sitting governments.

Some of the armed groups still operate in the region, largely in the DR Congo.

In Friday’s quadripartite summit, the leaders also agreed to invite other leaders to join in the fight against militancy in the continent.

The summit’s agenda falls in line with the African Union’s master roadmap to silence guns in the continent by 2020.

This entails ending all wars, civil conflicts, gender-based violence, violent conflicts and preventing genocide in the continent.
