Germany gives $2.24 million to assist refugees in Libya

Germany has given two million euros (2.24 million U.S. dollars) to the UN Higher Commission of Refugees (UNHCR) to support refugees, migrants and displaced persons in Libya.

“Following recent emergencies, German Foreign Ministry provides additional 2 million Euros to UNHCR Libya: strengthening protection of refugees and migrants and supporting displaced persons affected by the ongoing conflict,” The German Ambassador to Libya Oliver Owcza posted on Twitter.

The UNHCR tweeted that it will be able to continue assisting the displaced persons and refugees in Libya thanks to the crucial support from Germany.

The commission and other human rights bodies globally made a clarion call last week for the closure of all the illegal immigrant detention camps in Libya due to the current state of insecurity in the country.

The Libyan capital, Tripoli has witnessed deadly armed conflicts pitting the east-based army against the UN-backed government over control of the city.

Migrant shelters in Libya are crowded with thousands of migrants who have been rescued at sea or arrested by Libyan security services.

The chaos in Libya started following the 2011 uprising that toppled the late leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime, Libya became a preferred point of departure for thousands of illegal immigrants wanting to cross the Mediterranean toward European shores.
