South Africa’s women’s national football team captain Janine van Wyk will miss the rest of the 2019 Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Women’s Championship after suffering a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury against Malawi on Friday.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) said the defender will remain with the rest of the squad as she undergoes treatment.

Van Wyk, in a post on her official Twitter account, said she expected to be out for at least four weeks.

“It will be a tough few weeks to get by but I know I have the best support to help me get back in action again,” van Wyk wrote.

She further wished her teammates well as they continue the defense of the title they won in 2018. South Africa have won the COSAFA Women’s Championship a record five times.

Refiloe Jane will captain the side in van Wyk’s absence while Lebohang Ramalepe will assume the role of vice-captain of the team.

South Africa currently lead Group A with maximum points from two games notably having claimed a record-breaking 17-0 win against debutants Comoros Islands in their opening game.
