Mali beats Egypt to win 6th straight FIBA U16 championship

Mali defeated Egypt 84-48 in the final on Saturday to claim the 2019 FIBA Under-16 Women’s African Championship in Kigali, Rwanda.

The victory saw Mali win a 6th consecutive Women’s FIBA Under-16 Women’s African Championship and record a fourth straight win over Egypt in four meetings. Both teams met earlier in the group stages with Mali coming out on top 88-57.

Mali also maintained their undefeated streak in the Championship’s finals and finished this year’s tournament unbeaten.

Mali qualified for the final with a commanding 102-25 win over Mozambique while Egypt beat Angola 71-50 in the other semifinal.

Maimouna Haidara was Mali’s top performer in the final registering 16 points, 14 rebounds and 2 assists. Mariam Coulibaly, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, top scored in the final with 30 points. Coulibaly also finished with 7 rebounds and 5 assists.

By virtue of qualifying for the final, Mali and Egypt secured their tickets to the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2020.

Following the final, a 2019 FIBA Under-16 Women’s African Championship All-Star Five was named. The members were: Coulibaly, Haidara, Malak Sadek (Egypt), Maria Najjuma (Uganda) and Sara Caetano (Angola).
