Espérance de Tunis has officially been declared the champions of the 2019 CAF Champions League after the CAF disciplinary committee ruled that Wydad Casablanca “is considered to have lost the game in the 2nd leg.”

“The Wydad Athletic Club: is considered to have lost the game in the Final 2nd leg, a fine of $20,000 is imposed on the club for the abandonment of the match and a fine of $15,000 is imposed for the use of flares by the supporters,” a Wednesday statement from CAF said.

The second leg of the African Champions League final was abandoned on 1 June after Wydad Casablanca left the pitch following a disputed decision.

The Moroccan side refused to play on after having a 59th-minute effort disallowed in the return leg of the final in Tunis.

The VAR system was not reported not to be working and after a delay of almost two hours, the match was awarded to Esperance.

The first leg in Casablanca on 25 May ended 1-1 and Esperance were 1-0 up in the return a week later when Wydad thought they had equalised, only for the referee to signal for offside.

The events led to Esperance initially being awarded the winner’s trophy before CAF later withdrew it saying a replay would be staged. The continental body later reversed the decision.

On Wednesday, it confirmed that Espérance were the duly crowned champions of African football.

Morocco’s FA has been at loggerheads with CAF amid the events of the CAF Champions League.

The body even refused to attend CAF’s 41st General Assembly held in Cairo in June.

Espérance has hailed CAF’s decision to award them the trophy, which now pushes their number of CAF Champions League titles to four.

Wydad Casablanca is yet to respond to the decision.
