Hong Kong police on Wednesday said they had arrested five men involved in unlawful assembly at the Hong Kong International Airport.

Protesters stormed into the facility on Tuesday, forcing the aviation authorities to suspend of operations for a second day.

The five arrested men are aged between 17 and 28, with two of them suspected of assaulting police and possession of offensive weapons.

Amarteur video clips shared on social media showed protesters attacking and beating up a police officer at the airport on Tuesday. A journalist was also held hostage and tortured by other protesters on the same day. Tens of travelers also complained of being harassed by the demonstrating people, with others reporting to have lost their belonging.

The violent acts have been condemned by the Hong Kong police.

Assistant commissioner of police, Mak Chin-ho, said that the radical protesters carried out a series of extreme acts at the airport such as assaulting and torturing people, obstructing relief work, jostling passengers and disregarded human lives.

Following the incident, the Hong Kong airport authority obtained an interim injunction to restrain people from unlawfully obstructing or interfering with the proper use of the airport.

The violent protests have been condemned by various leaders, including the territory’s chief executive Carrie Lam, Singapore’s Minister for Law and Home Affairs Kasiviswanathan Shanmugam and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet. All the leaders called for calm.
