Morocco’s football authorities have appointed Vahid Halilhodzic as the new football coach of the national team.

Halilhodzic was appointed on Thursday to take over the role that has been vacant since the departure of Herve Renard, who resigned after a disappointing campaign at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt

The Atlas Lions were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Benin, who were participating in the tournament for the first time since 2012.

Halilhodzic, 67, takes over the Moroccan after a season in charge of French first division side FC Nantes.

The Bosnian boasts of a wealthy experience in the international scene, having previously taken charge of successful FIFA World Cup qualification bids with Côte d'Ivoire (2010) and Japan (2018), and also led Algeria into the Round of 16 at Brazil 2014.

He has also had a stint in Morocco, having led Raja Casablanca to their maiden CAF Champions League crown in 1997.

Previous coach Herve Renard was one of many coaches to quit their roles after the 2019 AFCON. Others include Javier Aguirre (Egypt), Desabre Sebastien Serge Louis (Uganda), Emmanuel Amunike  (Tanzania), Clarence Seedorf (Cameroon), Paul Put (Guinea) and Sebastien Migne (Kenya).
