The United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday that he had held a phone conversation with Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on security matters.
“I had a productive call today with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry. The United States is committed to supporting Egypt in our common fight against terrorism and our shared goal of promoting regional security,” Pompeo said on Twitter.
The U.S. sees Egypt as a valuable partner in the quest to ensure regional stability in the Middle-East.
Pompeo and Shoukry met in Washingon DC in March, where they held deliberations on ways of solving the crises that have faced Middle East nations like Syria, Libya and Yemen.
The two leaders also held another phone conversation in May, also focusing on regional security matters.
Egypt and the U.S. enjoy strong military cooperation which has seen the two sides hold joint drills in the past involving land, sea and air forces.
Other than the talks between Pompeo and Shoukry, US President Donald Trump also met in April with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Washington DC for bilateral talks.
The two presidents held discussions on various topics and regional issues of mutual concern.
