Algeria’s minister of culture has resigned following the death of five people in a stampede at a music concert in Algiers.
Meriem Merdaci resigned after widespread outrage over the Thursday incident, with many saying there was poor security in the event.
Abderraouf Derradji alias Soolking has attracted thousands of music fans to the August 20 Stadium for his show.
The rap musician is very popular in North Africa.
Merdaci’s resignation comes on the back of the sacking of Police chief Abdelkader Kara Bouhadba by interim president Abdelkader Bensalah.
No official reason was given for Bensalah’s dismissal, though it is widely linked to the stampede.
Those killed in the concert included three men and two women. Dozens are reported to have been injured, with around 40 hospitalised.
Around 30,000 people are estimated to have attended the Soolking concert which went on despite the stampede.
