A Kenyan baby, Jeremy Tubula, born prematurely and weighing only 400 grams, was finally discharged on Wednesday after 5 months of incubation at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in the capital, Nairobi.

Born 24 weeks into the pregnancy, Baby Tubula who arrived on April 1, was around 16 weeks early.

Doctors attributed the premature birth to pregnancy complications experienced by his mother, Catherine Joy.

With her baby put into incubation, Joy was also put on bed rest for two weeks by her doctors.

Through the hospital’s official Twitter account, doctors said Jeremy’s progress was phenomenal.

"Baby Jeremy was born at 25 weeks gestation with a birth weight of 400gms. He's been nurtured and managed by our doctors to for 5months to attain 3.5kgs. This is phenomenal for the country and the region." KNH said on Twitter.

The medics held a cake-cutting ceremony at the hospital to celebrate Baby Jeremy who was later handed over to his parents.

Jeremy is the second prematurely born baby to weigh 400 grams at KNH since the inception of the referral facility, according to the hospital’s CEO Evans Kamuri.

One of the people present at the discharge ceremony of baby Jeremy was eight-year-old Hope Obonyo, who was also born prematurely weighing just 400 grams.

The young girl is in good health, and is a source of encouragement for baby Jeremy's parents.
