The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the African Union (AU), joined forces to launch the Flagship Initiative to Accelerate Youth Employment in Agriculture and Agribusiness in Africa.

The goal is to enhance the business ecosystem by creating more jobs and opportunities for African youth.

Through the initiative, which was launched as part of the 2019 Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) African youth will receive technical assistance and knowledge about agribusiness and agricultural value chains.

According to FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu, African agribusinesses are expected to create a market worth US$1 trillion by 2030, so agriculture and agribusiness have an invaluable and untapped potential to address the youth unemployment challenge

“When we talk about the potential of human capital in Africa, we are particularly referring to young people.” he said.

Africa has the youngest population in the world, with more than 600 million young people in the labour market.
