Kenya’s overall inflation rate fell to 5 percent in August, down from 6.27 percent in July, due to lower foodstuff prices, the statistics bureau said on Friday.

Zachary Mwangi, director general of Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, said the consumer price indices (CPI) dropped 0.90 percent, from 203.61 in July to 201.78 in August.

“In August 2019, the food and non-alcohol drink’s index decreased by 1.89 percent following a decline of 1.04 percent that was recorded in July 2019,” Mwangi said in a statement issued from Nairobi.

According to the bureau, lower food cost was attributed mainly to favorable weather conditions.

In August, Mwangi said, the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels’ index fell by 0.10 percent as a result of lower prices of some cooking fuels.

The transport index decreased by 0.03 percent, on account of a reduction in the pump prices of diesel and petrol, the statistics body said.

The prices data was obtained from selected retail outlets in 25 data collection zones in Nairobi and 13 other urban centers.
