Former South Africa rugby international Os du Randt will be inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame at the World Rugby Awards scheduled for November 3.

Du Randt, who will be inductee number 145, is one of six former players to be feted at the ceremony at The Prince Park Tower in Tokyo, Japan. It will take place a day after the 2019 Rugby World Cup final.

The others are Richie McCaw and Graham Henry (New Zealand), Shiggy Konno (Japan), Diego Ormaechea (Uruguay) and Peter Fatialofa (Samoa).

The six players will take the number of Hall of Fame inductees to 148 since its inception in 2006.

Du Randt, who played as a loosehead prop, is a two-time World Cup winner after successful campaigns with the Springboks in 1995 and 2007. He is the only player outside of New Zealand and Australia to have won the Rugby World Cup twice.

The president of the South African Rugby Union, Mark Alexander, said the induction was a wonderful way of honoring one of South Africa’s best players in history.

“Os was revered as one of the best props of his generation and he anchored many scrums, not only for the Springboks, but also in the colours of the Cheetahs – whom he helped win their first Currie Cup title in 29 years in 2005 – Cats and Bulls,” Alexander said.

Du Randt, 47, was named the South Africa Rugby Player of the Year in 1997 and the Players’  Player of the Year in 2004. He represented South Africa 80 times over 13 years and retired after the 2007 Rugby World Cup final.

Du Randt also won the Tri-Nations trophy (now known as The Rugby Championship) in 2004 and enjoyed a successful provincial and Vodacom Super Rugby career in South Africa.

The World Rugby Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to rugby throughout their careers, while also demonstrating integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline and respect.
