US President Donald Trump on Monday met with Kenyan teacher Peter Tabichi, the recipient of the 2019 Global Teacher Prize at the White House.
Tabichi is scheduled to address the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York becoming the first such professional in Kenya to do so.
He is expected to give brief remarks on how he rose to the top in the teaching profession.
White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham tweeted a photo of President Trump and Tabichi but did not elaborate on any further details on what else may have transpired.
“His dedication, hard work, and belief in his student’s talent have led his poorly resourced school in Kenya to emerge victorious after taking on the country’s best schools in national science competitions. Peter, you inspire us all! Thank you for your commitment to your students.” Grisham tweeted.
Tabichi, who teaches science at Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Nakuru County, gives away 80% of his salary to support pupils who are unable to afford uniforms or books.
Tabichi is a member of the St. Franciscan Friars, a religious order founded by St Francis of Assisi in the 13th century.
Tabichi was appointed a champion for children in conflicts and crisis by a global body, Varky Foundation and now champions the cause of millions of children worldwide whose education is disrupted by conflicts and natural disasters.
