The United States on Monday announced new sanctions against Russia over "attempts to influence U.S. democratic processes", a move that comes amid an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump over his phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart.

"We have been clear: We will not tolerate foreign interference in our elections," a statement from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said. "The United States will continue to push back against malign actors who seek to subvert our democratic processes and we will not hesitate to impose further costs on Russia for its destabilizing and unacceptable activities."

The statement said the sanctions targeted four entities and seven individuals associated with Yevgeniy Prigozhin, and would also encompass his luxury assets including three aircrafts and a vessel.

"Let this serve as a warning: any actors who continue to engage with these individuals, companies, aircraft or vessel may also be subject to future sanctions," the statement added.

Prigozhin was also sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018 for trying to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

"This Administration will work tirelessly to safeguard our electoral process, and will aggressively pursue any other foreign actor that attempts to interfere in the 2020 elections," Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, Steven T. Mnuchin, said.
