Thirteen people lost their lives in a road accident involving a bus and a truck at Awasi along Kisumu-Kericho highway in western Kenya.

The accident occurred a few minutes past midnight when a truck heading towards Kisumu rammed into a bus that was headed to Kenya's capital, Nairobi. 12 passengers and the truck driver died at the scene.

In a statement released by police on Friday, the bus had 51 passengers by the time of the crash.

Police urged road users to be extra-careful and observe speed limits more so at night to avoid accidents.

Nyanza Regional police boss Vincent Makokha who visited the scene confirmed the incident, saying the injured passengers had been taken to hospital.

According to Kenya Red Cross, 35 casualties with multiple injuries have been evacuated to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, Awasi Mission Hospital and Hope Medical Hospital.
