The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, congratulated Kais Saied for winning the second round of presidential election held last Sunday.

In a statement released late on Wednesday, Mahamat also congratulated the people and the Tunisian authorities for the successful conduct of the second round of the presidential election.

Tunisia's Independent High Authority for Election (ISIE) on Monday announced that Tunisia's independent candidate Kais Saied won the second round of presidential election held Sunday by garnering 72.71 percent of the votes.

Mahamat noted that the AU election observation mission, like the other international observers deployed during the election, recognized the professionalism of the ISIE in the technical organization, operational vote, and noted that all of which made the vote run smoothly in peace and serenity.

According to the ISIE, the Tunisian electoral authority registered 55,348 rejected ballots and 15,912 blank ballots. The turnout rate for the presidential elections reached 55 percent.
