Egypt is set to launch its biggest metro station as it seeks to revamp Cairo's transport sector.

The Heliopolis Station will be launched on Sunday in a function expected to be attended by the country's transport minister Kamel Al-Wazir.

The station is reported to be the largest in the Middle East region, having been built on a 10,000-square metre space.

Construction of the new metro station began in 2015. It is set to connect to Cairo International Airport and Al-Salam city on the outskirts of the capital.

The new station is fitted with automated machines for direct ticket purchases, as well as digital signage system to help direct passengers within the facility.

The inauguration of Heliopolis Station comes just a few months after Egypt launched a number of vital stations in Heliopolis in the same phase, including Haroun El-Rashid, El-Shams Club, and Alf Maskan underground stations, ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations held in June-July.

The Cairo underground metro system currently carries more than four million passengers daily across the capital, Cairo, and surrounding areas.
