Air India is set to resume direct flights between Mumbai and Nairobi, eight years after it stopped operations on the route due to low volume of business.

The resumption of flights was confirmed by Rahul Chhabra, the high commissioner of India to Kenya, who said that the move was pushed by a growing demand for direct flight between the two cities.

"Air India will resume flying four times a week in order to tap into the growing demand for travel between the two countries. Depending on the market response, the frequency could be increased to daily." Chhabra said on Monday during the Kenya-India agribusiness forum.

The Federation of Indian Export Organizations is visiting Kenya with a delegation of 27 companies from India, primarily in the agricultural sector, seeking investment, joint venture and other business opportunities.

Chhabra said that the resumption of flights by Air India will give travellers more options since Kenya Airways already plies the route.

He also noted that India has streamlined the visa process for Kenyans seeking to travel to India.

"Kenyan citizens can now acquire visas online and is expected to increase number of outbound Kenya travelers to India." he said.

According to the envoy, the introduction of the Air India flights will also boost the number of Indians tourists visiting Kenya.
