Three legal scholars invited by Democrats testified on Wednesday that US President Donald Trump's actions against Ukraine clearly met the historical definition of impeachable offenses.
However, a fourth scholar, invited by Republicans, differed arguing that the case against the president was premature.
"Specifically, President Trump abused his office by corruptly soliciting President Volodymyr Zelensky to announce investigations of his political rivals in order to gain personal advantage, including in the 2020 presidential election." Noah Feldman of the Harvard Law School, a Democrat invitee, said.
The scholars stated their positions during the first formal impeachment hearing in the Judiciary Committee.
President Trump is accused of consistently pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate people and issues of political concern to Trump.
One of the individuals includes former US vice president Joe Biden, who is currently in the race for the 2020 Democratic Party nomination.
