The governor of Kenya's capital, Nairobi, Mike Mbuvi was arrested early on Friday on graft charges.
The governor's arrest was made after the country's Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji ordered his immediate arrest and prosecution alongside nine other country officials accused of embezzling public funds.
"I have found sufficient evidence to warrant prosecution and l have therefore ordered for the immediate arrest and arraignment in court of the Governor of Nairobi Hon Mike Mbuvi Sonko and other persons for the crimes of conflict of interest arising from having received monies from the County of Nairobi whilst serving as Governor, unlawful acquisition of public property, money laundering and other economic crimes," said the DPP.
Mbuvi has however denied the charges
I want to confidently state from the onset that I am more than ready for the lawful course that will help us know the truth," he said.
Mbuvi's arrest early sparked protests from a handful of his supporters in the capital, with police quickly deployed to diffuse the situation.
Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has in recent months been vocal against graft in his government.
"We will remain focused in the fight against corruption. We hope that every institution will play its part to make this war successful," he said earlier this year.
Mbuvi is set to remain in detention until Monday when he will be arraigned in court.
