South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns held Wydad Casablanca to a 0-0 draw in their second group match of the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League on Saturday at the Mohammed V Athletic Complex in Casablanca, Morocco.
This is fourth straight season in which the two former winners are meeting in club competition. This, however, marked the first time in which the South Africans avoided defeat away to the Moroccans.
The home side dominated possession against the visitors and slightly had more chances but neither side was able to break the deadlock over 90 minutes.
Sundowns had the ball in the back of the net early on in the game but the goal was disallowed. The 2016 champions then twice went close in the game's first quarter but failed to breach the Moroccans' defence.
CAF Player of the Year nominee Denis Onyango of Sundowns was called into action six minutes before the break when he denied Wydad's midfielder Badie Aouk a goalscoring opportunity.
Wydad goalkeeper Ahmed Tagnaouti then pulled off a strong save to deny South African midfielder Thapelo Morena on the stroke of halftime.
In the other group game, Zakaria Benchaa's strike was cancelled out by António Rosa Ribeiro as Angola's Atlético Petróleos de Luanda held Algeria's USM Alger to a 1-1 draw at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda.
Sundowns tops Group C on four points, two ahead of both Algerian club USM Alger and Wydad, while Angola's Atlético Petróleos de Luanda is bottom on one point.
In Group B, Algerian striker Karim Aribi scored twice as Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel beat Zimbabwe's FC Platinum 2-0 for its second win in two games.
TP Mazembe also made it two wins from two games in Group A as Jackson Muleka's brace earned the five-times African champions a 2-1 win away to Zambia's ZESCO United.
In the same group, Moroccan Achraf Bencharki struck twice as Egyptian side Zamalek claimed its first points of the campaign with a 2-0 win at home to Primeiro de Agosto of Angola.
The next set of group matches will be played on December 27.
