Nairobi's governor Mike Mbuvi was on Wednesday released on bail by a court after spending five days in remand.

Mbuvi was arrested on Friday on corruption charges in what is regarded as one of the most high-profile cases in the government's fight against graft.

He denied the charges, claiming witch-hunt.

"I want to confidently state from the onset that I am more than ready for the lawful course that will help us know the truth," he said in a statement after his arrest.

Magistrate Douglas Ogoti said the bail ruling took into account the presumption of innocence. He ordered that the governor be released after posting a bond of 30 million shillings (about $300,000), with a surety of a similar amount and a cash bail of 15 million shillings (about $150,000).

The prosecution has objected to the governor's release on bail saying he had previously escaped from custody following conviction in two criminal cases in the late 1990s.

Governor Mbuvi is known for his flamboyant lifestyle and love for gold.

The 44-year-old was elected to the position in 2017 on a Jubilee Party ticket. The Jubilee Party is the current ruling party in Kenya.

Prior to his election to the governorship, Mbuvi served as Nairobi senator for five years.

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has in recent months been vocal against graft in his government.

"We will remain focused in the fight against corruption. We hope that every institution will play its part to make this war successful," he said earlier this year.
