Algerian president Abdelmadjid Tebboune named Abdelaziz Djerad as the country's new prime minister, State Television reported on Saturday.

Djerad is a former diplomat who teaches political science at the University of Algiers.

The newly elected president makes the appointment after taking oath of office in the middle of this month amid the Hirak protest movement debates in response to his offer of dialogue to end a months-long political crisis.

Tebboune, also a former prime minister who casts himself as a reformer, was elected a fortnight ago in a vote the opposition regarded as a charade intended to keep the ruling elite in power.

However the army saw the poll as the best way to end 10 months of weekly mass protests that helped oust Tebboune's predecessor Abdelaziz Bouteflika in April, and restore a political order in which it holds sway.
