Iranian-backed protesters have begun withdrawing from the U.S. Embassy in Iraq after Pentagon said on Tuesday it would deploy 750 troops from a rapid response unit of the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East region.

Reports indicate that the protesters spent the night outside the besieged U.S. Embassy in Baghdad said they would demand the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country.

A State Department representative said on Tuesday that U.S. personnel "are secure and there has been no breach".

Moments later, U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran will be held responsible for any damage on its facilities in Baghdad.

"The U.S. Embassy in Iraq is, and has been for hours, SAFE! Many of our great Warfighters, together with the most lethal military equipment in the world, was immediately rushed to the site. Thank you to the President & Prime Minister of Iraq for their rapid response upon request. Iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred, at any of our facilities. They will pay a very BIG PRICE! This is not a Warning, it is a Threat. Happy New Year!" President Trump wrote on Twitter.
