Iran on Sunday announced a new step to further withdraw itself from the 2015 agreement between itself and world powers over Iran’s its nuclear program, according to Iranian state television.
Iran said that it is ending all its commitments to the 2015 nuclear agreement and will no longer adhere to limitations on its uranium enrichment program. It will enrich uranium based on its technical needs and continue its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN nuclear watchdog.
The move is seen as a reaction to the killing of General Qassem Soleimani, the former head of the elite Quds Force, by the United States in a drone strike on Friday.
Since the withdrawal of the US from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in May last year, Iran has taken a number of significant steps away from the nuclear deal.
In November last year, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that it would begin injecting uranium gas into centrifuges at its underground Fordow enrichment facility. These developments have attracted criticism from European powers and also strained their relations with the US.
Iran had previously agreed to restrict its nuclear program on condition that crippling international sanctions placed on it be lifted.
