U.S. President Donald Trump has called upon world powers to abandon the Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
President Trump made the call in his press briefing on Wednesday following Iran's missile attacks on military bases in Iraq hosting U.S. forces.
"Iran must abandon its nuclear ambitions and end its support for terrorism. The time has come for the United Kingdom, Germany, France and China to recognize this reality. They must now break away from the remnants of the Iran deal or JCPOA. And we must all work together towards making a deal with Iran that makes the world a safer and more peaceful place," President Trump said.
President Trump while withdrawing the U.S. from the JCPOA said the agreement was unreasonable because Iran's ballistic missile program, nuclear activities beyond 2025 and the conflicts between Yemen and Syria were not subject to any restrictions.
At the 2019 UN General Assembly, President Trump accused Iranian leaders of exploiting the 2015 nuclear deal to strengthen their foothold on power in Iran.
In his Wednesday briefing, the U.S. leader reiterated his sentiments that Iran had used the funds made available to them from the nuclear deal to spread terror.
"Iran's hostilities substantially increased after the foolish nuclear deal we signed in 2013 and they were given $150bn not to mention $1.8bn in cash. Instead of saying thank you to the United States, they chanted death to America. In fact, they chanted death to America the day the agreement was signed," he said.
"The missiles fired last night at us and our allies were paid for with the funds made available by the last administration."
Trump said his administration will never allow Tehran to own nuclear weapons.
He called for collaboration in the fights against ISIS, which he termed a natural enemy of Iran.
