The United States’ Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Tibor Nagy is scheduled to travel to the Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, and Sudan from January 15-29, 2020, the Department of State announced in a statement on Monday.

While in the continent, Nagy will meet with senior government officials for talks, as well as international partners and civil society representatives.

“His visit will emphasize the importance of promoting good governance and strong democratic institutions, advancing regional peace and security, combatting corruption, and forging stronger trade and investment ties,” the Department of State said in its statement.

The Department said Nagy's visit will reiterate the U.S.’ commitment to engage with the continent's youth.

While details of his South Sudan trip remain unknown, Nagy's Juba trip is expected to also expected to touch on the peace process.

South Sudan's rivaling factions are expected to form a transitional unity government by February in efforts to restore lasting peace to the country.

Ahead of his visit of Juba, Nagy called upon the country's leaders to make concessions in order to realize the dream of peace.

“The U.S. is committed to protecting human rights and determined to promote accountability of South Sudan peace process spoilers. Credible leaders should make all necessary compromises to build the framework for peace in South Sudan,” Nagy said on Twitter.

The Assistant Secretary will then head to France where he will also meet with government officials and partners.
