At least four people died in the past weekend due to heavy rains and strong winds that battered the southern province of Maputo in Mozambique, authorities told the national radio RM on Monday.
Victims were killed by thunder strike, flooding and electrocution due to the electrical wires blown down by gusts, according to Rocha Nuvunga, a representative from the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC) in the province of Maputo.
“The incidents were registered in the districts of Boane and Matola, where more than 600 houses were flooded,” said Nuvunga, adding that “work is underway to open transitional centers to accommodate families among other actions to minimize the effects of the bad weather.”
INGC said that since the beginning of the rainy season, 12 people have died, 57,887 people have been affected and 7,506 houses were partially destroyed throughout the country.
Destruction also include damaged health facilities and schools.
