Springboks and DHL Stormers captain Siya Kolisi will miss at least six weeks of the Super Rugby season after suffering a serious knee injury during the weekend.

Kolisi suffered a Grade 3 MCL tear in the Stormers' 27-0 win against New Zealand, according to South African sports broadcaster SuperSport.

Kolisi was substituted in the 26th minute of the game after he was hit with a late tackle by Hurricanes hooker Ricky Riccitelli.

In May last year, Kolisi also suffered a serious knee injury which saw him miss the remainder of last season's Super Rugby season and the Rugby Championship, which South Africa won.

He returned to competitive action in August playing for Currie Cup side Western Province and played a week later for South Africa against Argentina in Pretoria. He, however, recovered in time to feature for South Africa during the Rugby World Cup.

Reports suggest Springbok prop Steven Kitshoff is likely to be named as stand-in captain as Kolisi recovers from his injury.

Kolisi's teammate Bongi Mbonambi also suffered a hamstring injury during the same game and left the field after 50 minutes. The extent of the hooker's injury or how long he will be out of action is not yet known.

Mbonambi was due to undergo a scan to determine the severity of his injury on Monday.

The DHL Stormers will next play the Vodacom Bulls at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday.
