At least 30 travelers were killed late on Sunday after militants attacked and burned their vehicles in Nigeria’s Borno State, local media report.

The attackers believed to be Boko Haram insurgents also abducted many women and children, the terror group’s latest act of violence.

The travelers were heading to Borno State’s capital, Maiduguri, when they were forced to stop around 20 kilometers from their destination due to a road block. They were then attacked by the armed men at around 10 PM local time.

Local sources said the militants burned around 18 vehicles during the attack.

Boko Haram has waged a war in Nigeria for more than a decade, killing tens of thousands and forcing millions of others to flee their homes.

The war has created a humanitarian crisis in the northeast region of the country, with the militant group expanding its operations to neighbouring countries.

Crashing Boko Haram remains a key focus of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, a feat he has previously expressed confidence that he will achieve.

Buhari is championing for a united force to tackle terrorism in the West African region and has urged leaders from the Lake Chad region to commit troops to the fight against Boko Haram.

While the militants have been forced into hiding, they still manage to stage attacks occasionally.
