Kenya on Thursday recorded its first death from the deadly coronavirus, the country's Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said in a statement.

According to the statement, the deceased was a 66-year-old Kenyan male who had arrived in the country from South Africa through Swaziland on March 13.

"We have received the sad news of the first patient who had tested positive for coronavirus. The 66-year-old male Kenyan citizen who passed on this afternoon had been admitted at the Aga Khan Hospital Intensive Care Unit."

The statement added that the deceased had been suffering from diabetes.

Earlier on Thursday, the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Health Dr. Mercy Mwangangi announced that the country had recorded three new cases of the deadly virus raising the total number of confirmed cases to 31.
