Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday sent a message of appreciation to health workers around the world for their efforts in the fight against COVID-19.

The message by the 93-year-old monarch fell in line with the World Health Day, and it came as the world continues its battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I want to thank all those working in the healthcare profession for your selfless commitment and diligence as you undertake vitally important roles to protect and improve the health and well-being of people," the queen said.

Health workers have been singled out for praise across the world for their sacrifice in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Residents of various cities around the world have recently shown their appreciation of the health workers in various ways, including clapping their hands and cheering from the confines of their homes.

Queen Elizabeth said the health workers had set an example that should be followed by the rest of the world.

"In testing times, we often observe that the best of the human spirit comes to the fore; the dedication to service of countless nurses, midwives and other health workers, in these most challenging of circumstances, is an example to us all," the quen said.

"My family and I send our enduring appreciation and good wishes," she added.
