Somalia on Tuesday confirmed one new case of COVID-19, taking its tally to eight.

The Horn of African country's health ministry said the latest patient is a 58-year-old male of Somali citizen with no travel history.

Somalia is one of 52 African countries that have recorded cases of COVID-19. The continent's confirmed COVID-19 cases have surpassed 9,000, with over 400 deaths. Over 800 patients have recovered.

Somalia's health ministry said one patient in the country had fully recovered.

The country reported its first COVID-19 case on March 16.

Globally, confirmed cases of COVID-19 have exceeded 1.35 million, with the death toll surpassing 75,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Various governments have taken rapid measures aimed at curbing the spread of the disease.

In Somalia, the government suspended international flights and bolstered health surveillance at its entry points in a bid to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
