Kenya has confirmed five new COVID-19 cases, bringing the country's total tally to 189.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced the new cases in Friday, noting that all were Kenyan nationals. Only one of the new patients has a record of foreign travel.

Kenya is one of 52 African countries that have recorded COVID-19 cases. The continent has reported close to 11,000 COVID-19 cases, with over 500 deaths. Over 1,000 people have recovered.

Kagwe urged Kenyans to avoid the use of cash and resort to mobile money options for their day-to-day transactions.

"I am asking you to take all measures to avoid exchanging notes & coins. Physical money presents surfaces that can easily be contaminated with the virus," he said.

The Cabinet Secretary also noted that five more patients had successfully recovered and would be discharged. This brings the country's total number of discharged patients to 22.

Globally, more than 1.6 million people have tested positive for COVID-19, with over 96,000 deaths. Over 361,000 patients have fully recovered.
