The international financial institutions are important cooperation platforms, not political tools subject to the will of a few countries, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said Thursday.

Zhao Lijian made the remarks in response to media reports that the United States is opposing IMF's liquidity injection through issuance of new Special Drawing Rights as it does not want China and Iran to have access to new funding.

China has said on many occasions that in the face of the grave threats posed to mankind by COVID-19, the international community can only prevail by upholding the vision of a community with a shared future for humanity and working together to address it, Zhao remarked in a press briefing.

"Members of the international community should handle global affairs through consultation," Zhao said, adding that no individual or country should attempt to impose its own will or rule upon others.
