The European Union has pledged to support the Central African Republic in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Vice-President of the Commission, Josep Borrell, relayed the promise to President Faustin Archange Touadéra on Tuesday in a telephone conversation.

Borrel confirmed that the EU would soon organize, in collaboration with France, a humanitarian airlift for the transport of medical equipment necessary for the response to the pandemic.

He also reiterated the importance of fighting stigma and misinformation related o the pandemic.

The C.A.R. is one of 52 countries in Africa that have recorded cases of COVID-19, having registered 50 cases.

The disease has reported nearly 37,000 COVID-19 infections and 1,589 deaths, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Boreel in Tuesday's telephone conversation with President Touadéra also reiterated the need to accelerate the implementation of the Political Agreement on Peace and Reconciliation in the C.A.R. He called for the continuation of the dialogue between all the actors and the respect of the commitments made by the parties.
