Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addresses a press briefing on Friday 1 May, 2020.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced a ban on 1,500 models of assault weapons, following the murder of 22 people in a mass shooting incident last month.
"These weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time. There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada," said Trudeau.
"Effective immediately, it is no longer permitted to buy, sell, transport, import or use military-grade assault weapons in this country."
After the shooting incident, Trudeau said he would pursue stronger gun control laws to fulfil a pledge that he made during his campaigns.
According to Canadian police, the Nova Scotia shooting incident happened after the gunman engaged in an argument with his girlfriend, who survived the attack.
The occurrence has been described as the country’s worst mass shooting incident ever.
Trudeau announced a two-year “amnesty period” to allow gun owners to comply with the law.
