President Donald Trump says he is considering having the G7 Summit held in the United States as initially planned, after it was moved online amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The gathering of world leaders was due to be held between 10-12 June at Camp David, the country retreat for the U.S. president in Maryland, but was rescheduled to a video conference.

Trump said on Wednesday having the physical presence of the world leaders at the meeting "would be a great sign to all - normalization!"

"Now that our Country is 'Transitioning back to Greatness', I am considering rescheduling the G-7, on the same or similar date, in Washington, D.C., at the legendary Camp David. The other members are also beginning their comeback," President Trump wrote on Twitter.

COVID-19 infections continue to rise by the day, even as countries gradually reopen their economies which took a battering after the outbreak of the pandemic.

Globally, the number of cases have surpassed 4.9 million with the death toll going beyond 324,000, according to U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University.
