A showdown looms in the U.S. capital as Mayor Muriel Bowser plans weekend anti-racist protests while President Donald Trump continues to push for the policing of the city.

In his latest message on Twitter, President Trump called the Washington DC mayor "incompetent" for pushing back efforts by the federal government to police the capital's streets.

"The incompetent Mayor of Washington, D.C., Mayor Bowser, who's budget is totally out of control and is constantly coming back to us for "handouts," is now fighting with the National Guard, who saved her from great embarrassment over the last number of nights. If she doesn't treat these men and women well, then we'll bring in a different group of men and women!" Trump tweeted on Friday afternoon.

The president's message comes as Muriel contracted painters to imprint yellow letters down a busy DC street, a message in support of the anti-racist protests.

According to Muriel, the "BLACK LIVES MATTER" message is meant to "demonstrate that in America – you can peacefully assemble, you can bring grievances to your government, and you can demand change."

"We're here peacefully as Americans, on American streets, on DC streets," Bowser told reporters outside of St John's Church next to Lafayette Park.

Muriel's painting has been hailed by some celebrities across the U.S., including O'Shea Jackson, LeBron James and Jennifer Lopez.
