Kenya on Saturday reported its highest number of daily COVID-19 fatalities yet, as 23 patients died in the last 24 hours. This now pushes the country’s total fatalities to 364.

In a media briefing in the capital Nairobi, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced 727 new infections, taking the country’s total tally to 21,363.

Over the past month, Kenya has seen a constant spike in new infections even as health authorities remain fearful that the country has not hit its peak yet.

Kenya is one of only seven African countries that have reported more than 20,000 COVID-19 cases.

The country is the worst affected by the pandemic in the East African region, neared only by Ethiopia with has registered 17,999 cases.

On a brighter side however, 254 more patients recovered from the disease, taking Kenya’s total number of recoveries to 8,419.

The latest figures came as the government allowed a resumption of international travel into and out of the country, having been halted in March in a bid to curb further spread of COVID-19
