The number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in Africa have surpassed the 1.03 million mark as countries on the continent continue to report steady rises in cases.

The latest data from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that by Sunday evening, the continent had reported 1,034,931 cases and 22,903 deaths.

South Africa remains the worst-hit country on the continent, having reported 553,188 infections and 10,210 deaths.

The figures represent 53.5 percent of the continent’s infections and 44.6 percent of its fatalities.

The second-worst affected country, Egypt, has recorded 95,314 confirmed cases and 4,992 deaths.

Other than the two, the only other African countries that have registered more than 40,000 COVID-19 infections are Nigeria (46,140) and Ghana (41,003).

Further on, only eight African countries have reported more than 20,000 COVID-19 infections, pointing towards an initial slow spread of the virus on the continent.

Africa's COVID-19 confirmed cases and fatalities represent 5.3 percent of the global infections and 3.1 percent of the total COVID-19-related fatalities.
