Kenya's number of confirmed COVID-19 cases have exceeded the 34,000 mark, even though the country is seeing a slight decline in new infections.

The East African country's Health Cabinet Secretary, Mutahi Kagwe, announced in a media briefing on Sunday that 263 people had tested positive in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 34,057.

In the same period, two more patients succumbed to the disease, taking the country's total number of fatalities to 574.

Kenya is one of only eight countries in Africa that have registered more than 30,000 COVID-19 cases.

The country has recently seen a decline in new infections, pointing to progress in its fight against the pandemic.

A government-imposed nighttime curfew is still in place in efforts to curb further spread of the virus.

Other restrictions that had been imposed were however eased, including a partial lockdown that affected the capital Nairobi and the coastal city of Mombasa.

In better news, Kagwe on Sunday also noted that 98 more patients had recovered from the disease, bringing Kenya’s total number of recoveries to 19,688.
