The number of COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 1,390,560 on Saturday with a death toll of 33,626, according to the latest figures published by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

South Africa remains to be the hardest-hit country on the continent, having reported 657,627 infections and 15,857 deaths.

The figures represent 47.3 percent of the continent's caseload and 47.2 percent of its fatalities.

Egypt is the second worst-hit county by the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa, having registered 101,772 cases and 5,733 deaths.

No other African country has recorded more than 100,000 COVID-19 infections.

Further on, Morocco (97,264), Ethiopia (67,515) and Nigeria (56,956) are the only other countries apart from South Africa and Egypt to have reported more than 50,000 cases.

In terms of fatalities, Morocco (1,755), Algeria (1,659), Nigeria (1,094) and Ethiopia (1,072) are the only other countries on the continent apart from South Africa and Egypt to have reported more than 1,000 deaths.

In better news, Africa has recorded a total of 1,140,980 successful recoveries.
